Exciting news…Mossel Bay-Hermanus

Scheduled for December 2024, I am set to undertake an ambitious and comprehensive maritime expedition that will encompass an approximate distance of 28,000 kilometers. This grand endeavor will entail circumnavigating the entire continent of Africa, commencing from the port of Mossel Bay in South Africa.

With careful planning and meticulous preparation, the inaugural leg of this momentous journey will commence aboard the paddle boat, Vaquita 2. Departing from Mossel Bay, our voyage will navigate the vast expanse of the ocean, guiding us towards our first destination, the coastal town of Hermanus. Recognizing the significance of this initial phase, we have determined that our expedition will transition to an overland cycle between these two towns.

To adequately pre pare for this challenging expedition, over the course of the next 18 months, my partner Vusi and I have planned to undertake a rigorous cycling regimen covering 20,000 kilometers on the road. Our chosen mode of transportation will be bicycles, with me utilizing a mountain bike and Vusi employing a handcycle, showcasing his indomitable spirit despite his physical limitations. During this preparatory period, we intend to traverse diverse routes, affording us valuable experience and the opportunity to refine our cycling prowess. The inaugural route will commence from Mossel Bay, leading us through the towns of Riversdal, Swellendam, Caledon, and culminating in Hermanus, traversing the breathtakingly picturesque Hemel and Aarde Valley along the way.

Vusi in action

Notably, Vusi recently returned from an awe-inspiring cross-Africa expedition as a member of the esteemed Bidii Yetu group, further augmenting his expertise and resilience. A team of adaptive and able bodied cyclists pedaling over 2,000 kilometers in the longest handcycling event in the world crossing 5 countries in southern Africa from Swakopmund Namibia to Maputo Mozambique.

This voyage symbolizes a world wherein individuals discover the intrinsic strength to transcend limitations that hinder their personal growth. It represents a paradigm shift towards empowerment and inclusivity, fostering an environment where individuals are empowered to overcome any hindrances they encounter. By showcasing our determination, meticulous preparation, and unwavering resolve, we aim to inspire others and leave an indelible mark on all those who follow our expedition.

Vusi Marenene, a 43-year-old South African citizen. I am married to Liya Marenene and we have three kids a daughter and two sons.

For the past two decades, I have served as a dedicated trainer within the South African Police Service, stationed in the town of Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape.

Regrettably, my life took an unexpected turn when I became a quadriplegic due to a motor vehicle accident in February 2022. In the blink of an eye, I transitioned from being an able-bodied cyclist to an adaptive cyclist. Cycling has always been an integral part of my life, and it remains an unwavering passion despite the challenges I face.

Prior to the accident, I established myself as a highly competitive athlete, excelling in cycling, running, and swimming. In my role as a trainer within the law enforcement environment, I engaged in various fitness activities and competitions. I had the privilege of representing the national team for Police in both road cycling and mountain biking, earning numerous medals and accolades for my achievements.

To further enhance my skills and physical fitness expertise, I undertook an eight-month physical education training program in China. This invaluable experience empowered me to hone my training methods and contribute effectively to the development of law enforcement personnel in South Africa. Moreover, I have achieved notable success at the national level in running and martial arts, further cementing my reputation as an accomplished athlete.

A testament to my dedication and commitment, I am the sole Police officer in the entire country to have won the highly competitive “Fittest Police” competition on four occasions. This annual event serves as a test of the best individual Police officers in the country in terms of functional fitness.

Even as an able-bodied athlete, I actively participated in various endurance races, pushing my physical limits. Most recently, I took part in a handcycle event that spanned southern African countries, crossing from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean. These experiences have fueled my motivation and ambitions to become a para cyclist on an international level.

Throughout my journey, I have found strength and learned to garner respect within the field of athletics. However, as a new adaptive cyclist, I face ongoing challenges in adapting to my new reality. Achieving independence is of paramount importance, and I require assistance, particularly financial support for acquiring the necessary equipment that would enable me to regain independence. This stage of my injury is crucial, and with strong support, I am confident that I can realize my recent goals of becoming a para cyclist at an international level.

I am grateful for your time and consideration, and I sincerely hope that you will join me on this journey. Your support would not only contribute to my personal growth and achievements but would also serve as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges.

Thank you once again for your attention, and I look forward to the possibility of collaborating with you in pursuit of my dreams.

May our forthcoming travels be characterized by profound discoveries, personal growth, and a lasting impact on individuals who dare to dream beyond their perceived limitations.

Our fundraising along the way will contribute to Vusi’s dream to become a Parra- cyclist on international level, nutrition for 5 million malnourished children world wide through the M5M Foundation as well as the critical endangered Vaquita porpoise.

In advance we would like to thank Klein Karoo Toyota for partnering with us for the first leg of our journey. Pro Worx signs for the branding of the vehicles.
